Scientific Committee on Methodology and History of Restoration

General area of activity:
The temporary scientific committee on the methodology and history of restoration was established to address strategic initiatives in the field of the methodology and history of restoration.

The goals of the scientific committee:

  • To create a theoretical and methodological platform of the Russian National Committee of ICOMOS, which is interdisciplinary in nature, based on the scientific committee;
  • To create a unified professional dictionary of restoration definitions;
  • To study, summarize, and popularize the experience of the latest period of restoration in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The objectives of the scientific committee:

1. Organizational tasks:

    • forming the committee and including new members;
    • determining the committee’s structure and address;
    • monitoring and identifying relevant tasks and issues within the committee’s scope for inclusion in work plans;
    • searching for potential institutional partners for projects, organizations, or groups working in the committee’s area of interest;
    • analyzing and subsequently monitoring key activities aimed at studying, summarizing, and promoting the committee’s experience.

    2. Scientific and theoretical tasks:

    • formation of the foundations of restoration methodology in Russia in the 21st century;
    • creation of an information database on the basis of the ICOMOS website, containing information on theory, philosophy, history, and current issues of cultural heritage preservation (publications, articles, documents, etc.);
    • development of proposals on the methodology and techniques of restoration.

    3. Scientific and practical tasks:

    • participation in specialized events throughout the year;
    • conducting lectures, excursions, and other events aimed at promoting and studying cultural heritage sites and their preservation;
    • promoting the activities of ICOMOS in the field of studying, preserving, and restoring cultural heritage sites.

    Frequency of meetings of the Scientific Committee:
    Meetings are held by appointment in the VKS on-line format.

    Kuzevanov Oleg Arnoldovich

    Chief Architect of the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum-Reserve

    Architectural restorer (since 1991), chief architect of restoration projects (since 2000). He has been engaged in the restoration of palaces, mansions, churches and bridges in St. Petersburg and its suburbs, including the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo and the Eastern Wing of the General Staff Building. Author of a number of articles on Serbian monasteries in the Orthodox Encyclopedia, historical references, including the Triumphal Arch of Palmyra. Deputy Chairman of the Board of the St. Petersburg Branch of ICOMOS (since 2022).
