Scientific Committee on Methodology and History of Restoration
General direction of activities:
The Interim Scientific Committee on Methodology and History of Restoration is established to address strategic initiatives in the field of restoration methodology and history.
The objectives of the scientific committee:
- To form, on the basis of the scientific committee, a theoretical and methodological platform of the ICOMOS National Committee (the Russian division of the International Council on Monuments and Sites) of an interdisciplinary nature;
- To compile a unified professional dictionary of definitions of restoration;
- To study, generalize and promote the experience of the newest period of restoration of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
The tasks of the scientific committee:
- Organisational tasks:
- formation of the committee, inclusion of new members;
- determination of the structure and address of the committee;
- monitoring, identification of current tasks and problems in the committee’s area of interest for inclusion in the work plans;
- search for potential institutional partners of projects, organisations or groups working in the committee’s area of interest;
- analysis and subsequent monitoring of the main activities aimed at studying, generalising and promoting experience in the field of cultural heritage preservation (exhibitions, conferences, training programmes, etc.).
- Scientific and theoretical tasks:
- formation of the foundations of restoration methodology in Russia in the XXI century;
- creation on the basis of the ICOMOS website of an information base containing information on theory, philosophy, history, and current problems of cultural heritage preservation (publications, articles, documents, etc.);
- development of recommendations on restoration techniques and methodology.
- Scientific and practical tasks:
- participation in specialized events during the year;
- conducting lectures and excursions and other events aimed at promoting and studying cultural heritage objects and issues of their conservation;
- promotion of ICOMOS activities in the field of study, conservation and restoration of cultural heritage sites.
Frequency of scientific committee meetings:
Meetings by pre-registration in VCS (Videoconferencing) on-line format.

Oleg Arnoldovich Kuzevanov
Chief Architect of the Tsarskoye Selo State Museum of Fine Arts
Architect-restorer (since 1991), chief architect of restoration projects (since 2000). He was engaged in restoration of palaces, mansions, churches and bridges of St. Petersburg and its suburbs, including the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo and the Eastern Wing of the General Staff. Author of several articles on Serbian monasteries in the “Orthodox Encyclopedia”, historical references, including on the Triumphal Arch of Palmyra. Vice-Chairman of the Council of the St. Petersburg ICOMOS office (since 2022).
